This is my first foray into the world of recipe blogging so bare with me and I hope this comes out as easy to follow because they taste amazing.
I came up with this recipe after work one night just wandering around my local Tesco really not knowing what to have to eat and recently setting myself back onto a healthy diet (now don’t get me wrong I’m not talking Atkins here just healthy wholesome food that’s tasty and good at the same time.) So what do I do but head to the reduced section, there’s always a bargain or two to be had in there I think with a smile across my grill.
Bargain one-turkey mince in the bag, always happy with turkey! then I come across some Nandos extra hot sauce and some harisa Mayo, light bulb moment BURGERS! I quickly pick up some pittas (they work best for this) onion and some chirizo to add some kick and it’s game on. I zoom home to get in Jamie Oliver mode!
INGREDIENTS: Makes 6-8 burgers depending on the size you go for.
500g turkey mince
1 red onion – chopped
1 egg – beaten
30g good quality oats (as oppose to bread crums)
One good dollop of Nandos extra hot sauce (as much or as little as you like really)
8 slices of chrizo – chopped
Pinch of salt and pepper
Start by mixing all the ingredients apart from the mayo in a decent size bowl, this gets a bit messy and the mix will remain quite sticky throughout, more so than a normal burger mix, keep with it though its more than worth it.
Heat up 1 tbsp of coconut or olive oil in a pan on a medium heat
Shape the patties to a maximum of palm sized and about 1-1 1/2 inch and fry away on a medium heat turning regularly for about 5-10 minutes just keep checking until they are a nice golden brown colour.
Lightly sprinkle the pittas with cold water on each side and grill for a couple of minutes each side. Once done slice open and spread a decent spoon of the mayo in each, by this time the burgers should be done.
All that’s left is to slice each burger and fill the pittas with some salad and the tasty meat disks!
